The Elements of Style, William Sruck & E.B. White

The Elements of Style has been the only book, I’ve consistently owned and it’s been consistently stolen. I think, I’m reviewing the fourth copy that I’ve bought.  It’s been stolen by roommates, friends and co-workers. Sometimes disappearing to that place where socks go. It’s been stolen for good reason, it’s an invaluable book. There’s too much to consume in one session, so it must be read and re-visited as time will allow.

It’s condensed, well written and smart. Every time I get through it, I feel a slightly better grammatician, which is saying something. I’m wonderfully creative, yet the technical side of my writing often needs improvement. Constantly working on this, I try to consume a few pages of this book whenever time allows.

That’s the best way to read this book. In small nuggets. On the train or waiting for someone.  Each time I read it, i’ve learned something new. The largest challenge for me as a writer, mastering the technical side, is Dyslexia, I have it in a mild form. Yet, enough to trip me up, more often then I’d like.  So rules help me cope.

As a blogger, or someone addicted to twitter, we often forget that The Elements of Style are quite important, often given up when typing at the speed of light.

The reason I wanted to bring this to your attention, is because there are still people that don’t know about this wonderful little book. Check it out and get your copy today.

  1. Excellent suggestion, although I’d recommend the illustrated version that Penguin Press put out in 2005. The advice and examples are the same, but the illustrations by Maira Kalman make the experience even more delightful.

  2. I am actually going to download the PDF version of Elements Of Style and apply it on my blog. The PDF version will be better for me as I have an OS which goes everywhere with me via USB key.

Thank you for pointing out this great little book to me!
